There’s a huge focus on being more mindful about what we put on and into our bodies. And deodorant is one of those things.

As an important part of most people’s hygiene routine, deodorant is used to keep us smelling clean and fresh. But for too long the concept of having no scent has been hailed as the most hygienic, despite it not always being so.

Many commercial deodorant’s these days use a swathe of chemicals whether they be in the form of preservatives or synthetic ingredients attempting to mimic something natural.

Many of these products cause skin irritation and could even pose health risks. Depending on where you are in the world, some chemicals banned in one country are not banned in the other, meaning companies use all sorts of ingredients in products and you might not have a clue whats in them.

The solution to many of these problems, is natural deodorant. Not only does it remedy ethical concerns you may have about commercial use of chemicals, but it also covers off ecological and environmental concerns.

Basically, its not only good for you it’s also good for the environment and you’re being a better and more mindful person.

End of story!

Not quite. Let’s get into some of the benefits of using natural deodorant.

Your body needs to sweat.

Yes. Yes, it does.

Your body has a natural odour. And it isn’t offensive. Ok, we all get sweaty, or eat a garlic infused meal which will exacerbate our natural body odour. But as long as you maintain regular hygiene, your body’s natural odour is not offensive.

Most of the time!

Using natural deodorant allows your body to sweat the way it is intended to. We need to sweat to regulate our body temperature and release toxins. Chemical deodorants can clog the pores in your armpit and make it harder for your body to sweat the way it needs to. Natural deodorant still helps prevent odour because it regulates and does not exacerbate the natural bacteria from your body.

If you have a bad body odour, regular deodorant could actually make it worse.

When it comes to natural deodorant vs regular, natural ingredients are definitely best. When the aluminium or other chemicals in your traditional antiperspirant build up on the skin, they mix with the bacteria that causes sweat and make the odour even worse. On top of that, these chemicals can react with the chemicals in your clothing's fabric and make stains on your clothing. No thanks!

Tips for Switching to a Natural Deodorant

First tip – check out our earlier post on Switching to natural deodorants – top tips.

Now that you know why natural deodorant is better, it’s important to know how to make the switch. First, you'll need to take a few days to make the switch, so you'll need to go au naturale for a few days.

Remember to wash daily and exfoliate weekly to help remove the toxins that traditional deodorant created. Not all deodorants work for all people. If may take a trial-and-error process to find the one that works for you. Sticking to natural fabrics can help you stay odour-free while you make the switch!

With this simple switch towards better products that work with our bodies rather than against them, consider the other products you use. Do your shampoos and conditioners have too many pore-clogging ingredients in them? Is your acne treatment too harsh and drying for your skin? By using the best products for your skin, you ensure a healthy, happy, and beautiful complexion.

Our featured product this month is the Jimboomba Summer Natural Deodorant Paste.

Homestead Soapery’s “Jimboomba Summer” Deodorant Paste is an effective natural deodorant that is known to out-perform even the mainstream chemical-laden brands. This paste has an intuitive, woody and fresh scent with Cedarwood, Rosemary and Bergamot essential oils.

This deodorant paste keeps you fresh without inhibiting your sweat glands' ability to dispel toxins. It contains a unique blend of natural ingredients including Tapioca Starch, Kaolin Clay and Organic Coconut Oil, which work together to absorb moisture. Jimboomba Summer Deodorant Paste neutralises odour and keeps you feeling fresh.

Made in Jimboomba, Australia. Handmade, Hand Poured, Gluten-free, Cruelty-free, Palm Oil-free.

As this is a handmade and hand poured product, consistencies across batches may vary. Products may melt or harden due to weather conditions and appear grainy in texture - this is perfectly normal and won't affect performance.

NB: ALL natural skincare products containing butters and oils are made on demand. Homestead Soapery does not use any preservatives or stabilisers in their products. ALL natural skincare products are made fresh each order and sent out immediately for best longevity.

NOTE: This deodorant is not an anti-perspirant. Natural deodorants do not contain harmful elements which are normally used to inhibit perspiration in commercial products. You may still sweat. To improve dryness and longevity, use a makeup brush to lightly dust the armpit area with tapioca or cornstarch or arrowroot powder after application. This is an optional step. If you are new to using natural deodorants, you may need some time to reap the full benefits if your armpit area is detoxing from chemical products. This is entirely normal and expected. Due to the inflammatory nature of non aluminium bicarbonate soda used in deodorant paste, we have chosen to omit it entirely and therefore our deodorant paste is safe for use for those shaving often or with sensitive skin.
